Artist: Lee Bradford

Artist Statement: I am a creator of many things, but today I am bringing you something personal. I find books that have outdated or bigoted perspectives on race. gender, and sexuality create illustrated black-out poetry from the pages as a means to make something beautiful from something that meant to hurt me. These are mixed media, primarily acrylic, watercolor, and ink, and they explore the idea of transformation and personal faith.

Artist: Lisa O'Connell

Artist Statement: I love creating art, mainly nonrepresentational acrylic paintings. I use many methods including: a paintbrush, acrylic pours (clean, dirty, flip, swipe, and more), as well as something I call “scrapies”. I’ve painted hundreds of paintings in a short time frame. I’ve always wanted to paint but was never able to for a variety of reasons. When the pandemic started I was furloughed from my job and decided “it’s time to teach myself how to paint”. I watched YouTube tutorials, and read painting tips and techniques religiously. I’ve been featured in Friendship Flea Franklinton, Lookout Supply and JimmyLuka’s.

Artist: Janelle Hallett

Artist Statement: My work uses traditional tapestry techniques on a frame loom using both natural and synthetic fibers. I use tabby weave to create images with color blending by bundling multiple strands of yarn to create dimension and variation. There are two ways I approach tapestry weaving in my art: I let the fibers inspire my direction or I draw inspiration from the natural world and select fibers that evoke natural elements. I am a fiber artist working with both traditional tapestry techniques and non-traditional style looms. I use colors, music, and nature as my inspiration and rely on the artist flow state to bring my pieces into fruition. There are two ways I approach tapestry weaving in my art: I let the fibers inspire my direction or I draw inspiration from the natural world and select fibers that evoke natural elements. My work currently focuses on circular weavings and how the shape and fibers work together to create textures, movement, and feeling. I am interested in exploring new fibers and yarns and how these materials translate into new shapes beyond circular or square/rectangular.

Artist: Kacy Berger

Artist Statement: After many years of working in a used bookstore, I often saved books from the trash or recycling that were deemed damaged and not valuable. After all my years of collecting I wanted to find a way to save the beautiful illustrations and photos from these books, magazines, outdated calendars and planners (I never use anything that does not have irreparable damage). That's when I started my decoupage crafting as a way to give them a new purpose or a new life. I use items like old ceramic tiles, wood boxes, game pieces, light switch covers and votive candle holders. Each piece is a one of a kind item turned into accessories and functional house decor that you won't find anywhere else. Not only are our items things that are being reused or up-cycled, we also use easily recyclable and minimal shipping materials as well as marketing materials made from recycled, earth friendly papers. We are a family owned business who has extensive experience in retail and customer service. I have previously had a table sale to launch my business at Java Central in Uptown. I also have an Etsy shop.

Artist: Cindy Ceroky

Artist Statement: I am a self-taught mixed media artist, raised in uptown Westerville. Ever since I can recall, even as a child, I loved creating something from nothing. This included anything ranging from a hand-drawn creature or world, using a found object in nature, or repurposing an old item time left behind. The purpose is to evoke or savor that moment by use of a palpable and visual texture. I try to share a connection or emotion through the use of medias rich in texture and layers, encompassing vintage papers, fabrics, ephemera, and found objects. media. I love working on wood canvas because it can withstand the weight and the layers of work and time. I am that person that has to stop to appreciate an unexpected small detail in an object, or the weathered wear that time has imposed on a vintage item naturally.

Artist: Kathleen Norris

Artist Statement: Kathy Norris moved beyond norms and perceived barriers of retirement and a pandemic to become a visual artist to create beyond what thought possible. Kathy transitioned from a lifelong educator to an artist during the challenges of 2020-21. Kathy's focus and commitment to her art were apparent to our community as she could be seen "painting on the porch" at the David Myers Art Studio & Gallery every week during that time. Her desire to create and connect with people outdoors in Uptown was beneficial during this time of lockdowns, shutdowns, quarantines, rules, masks, and mandates. Kathy made a tremendous difference and inspired many individuals and artists, both children and adults alike. Kathy's art evolved as she leaned on her instinct, and her expression became tangible. Kathy Norris is an example to those who desire to explore the arts during or after their career and realize being fully expressed, especially in the face of adversity. Kathy's two-person show, Two Voices, One Heart" in Uptown Westerville, April-May 2021, was a much-needed perspective. Many paintings were exhibited outside the gallery on the porch to accommodate those who prefer to view art outdoors and those driving by or waiting in traffic on Main Street. As she did for decades as an educator, Kathy's commitment to inspire others is now apparent in her beautifully expressive paintings and in the souls of those she inspires.
